TROPICAL THEME ENTERTAINING IDEAS

One of the most popular party themes is the Luau theme, transport your guests from everyday life to a tropical island getaway for an evening. Whether it is held indoors or out, it is a welcome "trip" any time of the year, for any occasion.

Invitations

  • Write your party details on a coconut or on the back of a suntan lotion sample.
  • Hand deliver your desert island party plan in a glass bottle.
  • Enclose a lei with your invitation attached. Instruct your guest to wear the lei to the party.
  • Attach your luau invitation to a pair of sunglasses and mail in a padded envelope.

    Decorations
  • Line buffet, and even the bar, with grass skirts.
  • Use a rubber raft, old charcoal grill or child's wading pool, as a cooler. Fill with ice and canned drinks.
  • Outdoor tiki torches are a must, especially to keep the bugs away.
  • Round glass bowls, half-filled with water, with live goldfish is a fun centerpiece.
  • Add votive candles to the table and use shells as candleholders. Sprinkle a little sand in the center of the table to really give a "beach-y" feel.
  • Place mylar balloon bouquets of parrot and tropical fish shapes around the room.
  • Hang fishnets from ceiling or doorways.
  • Have your guests dress in grass skirts and halter tops, Hawaiian shirts and shorts.
  • If you didn't send Hawaiian leis with the invitations, greet your guests at the door with a lei.
  • Check out tropical lighting for some fun decorations, such as Tiki String Lights, which would be great to string up and around the buffet table or the entry way; and the foil parrot or palm tree picks to decorate appetizer and fruit trays.

    Activities

  • Have a limbo dancing contest.
  • Arrange for hula lessons; or have a hula hoop contest.
  • Lip-sync some of Don Ho's recordings, such as "Tiny Bubbles" and "Pearly Shells."
  • Scavenger or treasure hunts are another option.
  • Pass The Coconut-Played like hot potato, make sure you use tropical music.
  • Fill a child's swimming pool with sand-place coins in the sand.

    Trimming Your Table
  • Set the table with brightly colored plates, napkins and cutlery. Luau colors tend to be red, yellow, hot pink, green and a hint of purple.
  • Glasses for fun tropical drinks are a must. Either plastic margarita glasses or palm tree cups would really put your guests in paradise.
