Luau Recipes

The Luau originated in 1819 when King Kamehameha abolished the practice of seperate eating arrangements for men and women. This feast was a symbolic act and thus the luau began. The luau name came into being due to the favorite dish of the feast. This dish was luau-a dish of taro plant leaves, with chicken baked in coconut milk. This feast was laid out on a mat or table strewn with fern and flowers massed together to form a tablecloth of sorts. The main staple of the feast was poi. Poi is made from pounded taro root. When victorians arrived in Hawaii and found that the natives did not use any type of utensils it caused many raised eyebrows. Luaus are still a tradition in hawaii today, however, utensils are allowed!!!
